Vibrant Democracy

The Forward South Carolina team is working closely with legislators and partner organizations across the state to give South Carolinians more choices in elections, more confidence in a government that works for them, and more say in our future. Three of the main priorities driving our Vibrant Democracy principle this year include:

1. Ending Biased Elections

We believe election reform is necessary to ensure the democratic ideal of 'free and fair elections' is upheld in South Carolina.

We believe the division and dysfunction in our politics is by design, and that to make progress toward a brighter, more unified future, we must replace the two-party system with one that is inclusive, competitive, and multi-partisan.

We believe our legislators must prioritize the health of our democracy above party or personal interests and support election reforms like rank choice voting, fair districting, and unbiased ballot initiatives that give greater power, voice, and choice back to the people.

2. Encouraging Healthy Competition

We believe the political duopoly wields unearned, authoritative power over state politics at a severe disservice to the people of South Carolina.

We believe a vibrant democracy is dependent on the active participation and leadership of younger generations and people of diverse backgrounds, and our campaign regulations must be amended as such

We believe an entrepreneurial spirit is imperative as we work to stabilize our present day and thrive as a people in a future of unknowable unknowns. What got us here won't get us where we need to go next, and our political system needs to give space to innovation in order to create positive change.

 3. Promoting Public Trust & Engagement

We believe a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, requires the participation of an accurately informed and engaged public.

We believe our legislators and media must turn away from toxic politics and 'culture war issues' to see a return to common sense, common decency, and a commitment to seeking common ground across South Carolina.

We believe legislators must lead by example in detoxifying and healing our politics by operating with greater integrity, responsibility, and accountability to their constituents.
